On the 29th October 2012 new EU legislation comes into force which affects the building and sale of trailers. This will affect 'Maypole trailers' and the way they are sold into the market place. This article is to help our customers understand the implications of this legislation, on their business.
Trailers first used in the UK prior to 29th October 2012 do not require vehicle type approval or for the sale of the trailer to be recorded. Until this date you can continue to sell trailers in the normal way.
Maypole branded trailers manufactured or imported into the UK prior to 30th July 2012 may continue to be sold indefinitely in the UK for highway use. All current stocks of Maypole trailers fall into this category.
From 29th October 2012, conditions detailed in “S.I. 2009 No.717 - Road Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2009” will apply. Thereafter, Maypole trailer distributors will be legally obliged to comply with the the record keeping requirements of these regulations.
The information which has to be obtained and kept for a minimum of 10 years (a legal requirement) by the distributor or retailer supplying the trailer for first use on the road comprises:
(a) name and address and (if any) company registration number of manufacturer –
Maypole Ltd. 162 Clapgate, Lane Birmingham, B32 3DE.
Company registration number 1502304.
(b) the manufacturer's designation (make and model) of the trailer –
MP711, MP712, MP715, MP718.
(c) the month and year when manufacture of the trailer was completed –
As shown on the trailer identification plate.
(d) the vehicle identification (VIN) number -
As shown on the trailer identification plate.
(e) the number of the type approval or individual approval certificate -
Not required for trailers produced before 30th July 2012, this includes all current stock.
(f) a copy of any certificate of conformity issued in respect of the trailer –
Available upon request from Maypole.
(g) the date of supply
(h) the name and address of the purchaser
This is the customer who purchases the trailer.
Subject to the above, ALL Maypole branded trailers currently in Maypole’s stock or held by our distributors are and will continue to be both legal and fit for use on UK highways.
We are working hard to complete the 'Type approval' process on our range of trailers for early 2013.We are also investigating on-line registration to support our distributors and make their record keeping as easy as possible.
The above information is our opinion, based upon relevant legislation S.I.2009 No717 and legal opinion provided by the VCA.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact our sales department.
Many thanks
