The smart devices utilise a multi-stage charging process to charge a connected battery in the safest and most efficient method possible. Below is a detailed explanation of the primary charging methods that feature on all battery chargers that feature a charging curve chart. Please not that not all devices feature the exact same stages and not all graphs are the same.
Constant current - Bulk charging stage which supplies about 70% of the energy required to charge the battery; during this stage current is held at a steady value and the battery voltage rises until the maximum charging voltage is achieved.
Constant voltage - This tops up the cells and completes the charge. Voltage remains constant and the current gradually falls towards zero. This stage also aids the reduction of any imbalances across individual cells, or batteries connected in series.
Constant current/constant voltage - This device will restrict the current output until the battery reaches a specific voltage, with the charger then gradually reducing the current as the battery becomes fully charged. This method is considered the most efficient without the risk of over-charging.
Maintenance charging - Will sustain a fully charged battery in optimum condition whilst minimizing the risk of long-term damage to the battery due to either under-charging or over-charging.
